Check back often to see what types of handyguy
hints and tips we can find for you.

Handyguy and crew are on their way home! After talking to Handyguy last night, he decided that between a sore back and backside, he would start his trip home in Belle Center. It is so nice that they are able to do that. The support team that is involved in making this ride a success are just awesome. I never realized what went into a ride like this to make it successful, but I can tell you now, I wouldn’t want to try to do it alone! I have seen things from trucks packed full of gear, food, bikes, bike repair and even motorcycles for safety to include sweeping out the gravel in a corner so no one slides and gets hurt!
Everyone should start rolling into Youngs Dairy between noon and 2pm or so just in case you would like to come see them home. This would make their day!
Don’t forget, this is to support 4 awesome charities and you can visit here to show your support (in the form of any amount of donation). I know times are tough, so even a sharing of the post is showing your support.
I will have pics of the closing this afternoon for you when I get home, but for now, I am headed for visiting of my mother-in-law who suffers from Alzheimer’s.
Have a good day and we will have more this evening.
The 165 mile 2-day ride starts in Yellow Springs, Ohio at Young’s Jersey Dairy and the first half of the ride ends at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. The second part is getting back home the same route. There are also one day rides. Handyguy rides for his mother who has Alzheimer’s, but all four of the charities above will benefit from your support. If you would like to donate, donations for the ride may be made through August 30th by visiting here. All donations are appreciated.

Thank You All

Handyguy and crew have finally arrived at Ohio Northern University in Ada! Handyguy had a couple of technical difficulties along the way (2 flat tires in 4 miles). I want to giggle, but just can’t bring myself to do it since he did ride all that way today!
Help me to show these folks some support with your comments and views and visit here to show your support (in the form of any amount of donation) to of all 4 of our awesome charities!
More pics of the tiring day!
Awww…poor Handyguy a flat tire!
Jim, one of the crew that will sweep away the gravel for safety or call for help if needed!

Want to add color to your deck for the summer? Here is a great design for a maintenance free deck planters for under $15 dollars. This project takes about an hour to assemble and install. It looks lovely and can be used under a window or the deck. I chose to hang the ones the hubby, aka “Handyguy” made me for Mother’s Day on the deck.
Parts needed
1) One 10 foot piece of vinyl gutter 5 inches wide
2) Two vinyl end caps for each of the deck planters
3) Two vinyl gutter hanging brackets for each of the deck planters (add extra brackets if making longer a planter longer then 3 foot in length)

Assembly instructions
1) Cut gutter to desired length (it cuts fairly easily, so your hacksaw should do the trick)
2) Glue end caps onto gutter (use silicone caulk)
3) Drill a half inch hole in bottom of each of the deck planters every 4 inches (holes are to allow excess water to escape)

4) Line bottom of the deck planters with pieces of clay pots or larger gravel to keep planting soil from falling out of the holes
5) Using vinyl gutter hangers, attach gutter to deck or under a window
6) Fill the deck planters with potting soil and your favorite plants
7) Sit back and enjoy the flowers

A special thanks to my “Handyguy” that made these neat deck planters for me! He knows how much I love the flowers and gardening in the summer! I don’t know that he would admit it, but I think he enjoys them as much as I do. Have fun making yours!

It’s time to get that bike down and get out in the sun, but you need to do a little bike maintenance first! Here are a few tips to make your bike ready for a summer of enjoyment.
The first and simplest bike maintenance you can do is to dust it off and wipe it down. I know that sounds silly, but it also allows you to look the bike over a little closer and check for areas of wear and tear from the year prior year.
Use a paste wax to remove any rust that has shown up over the winter. This will also help if you are stuck in the rain by letting the water run off the frame quicker.
Oil the chain. I use Spin Doctor Dry Lube but I know a few people use a wet on lube such as Spin Doctor Wet Lube
.
Make sure your gears are shifting smoothly. If they are not shifting properly, have someone help you check the derailers, the mechanism that moves the chain from one sprocket to another, both front and back.

Have them hold the bike while you pedal it with your hand and shift gears. Make any necessary adjustments. If you are not comfortable completing this bike maintenance item, and the gears are not shifting smoothly, you may want to visit a bike shop to have them adjusted.
Check the tires. Look for dry rot, holes, glass or any other debris that is stuck on them. Even if you don’t ride much you should think about changing the tires every couple of years. Nothing ruins a ride like a flat tire. Always have at least one extra tube with you when you ride or use a Slime Smart Tube.
Check the brakes. Make sure they aren’t worn. Don’t use any wax or cleaner on the wheels that might leave a film. This can cause the breaks to slip even once it has dried.
Look over the bike closely for any cracks or broken components. Look for wear marks that shouldn’t be there. A chain rubbing or a tire out of alignment is a few things to look at. Make sure the gear and brake cables don’t have any fraying.
I like to take my bike into have a professional go over it about every other year. My local bike shop does an excellent job of cleaning and completing my bike maintenance along with any repairs that are needed.
The last part of the bike that needs to be checked, isn’t actually attached to the bike. Make sure you check your bike helmet carefully and it will need to be replaced about every 3 years as they get brittle over time. I wear the Bell Delirium Mountain Bike Bicycle Helmet.

Every Spring, we use this little pet hair remover household tip. Since it is a money-saving idea too, that makes it even better! There are many things we can do in our daily activities to save.
Instead of spending money on pet hair remover tools for your furniture, try this handy household tip of using a damp rubber glove and the hair will just roll up in a ball to be thrown away. We have 4 pets in our home, and the furniture gets this treatment about every week in the spring of the year. It is much faster than getting out the vacuum and spending half the day wasting electric trying to get rid of the hair. Or spending half my day scaring out pets half to death chasing them around with the vacuum.
Keep those gloves handy for a last-minute pet hair remover to brush off of your clothes on the way out the door as well. We even keep a pair in my glove box so I can brush myself off before going in to work.
With Spring cleaning season on the way, this is probably a good time to keep your eyes open for a coupon for the rubber gloves.
If you have a household tip or way to save money, please share with us. We are always ready to save a dollar where we can.
